Q: Why did Dumbledore want Ron to keep his deluminator?

A: Because he knew that Ron might need a little more guidance than the other two. Dumbledore understood Ron’s importance in the trio. He wasn’t the most skilled, or the most intelligent, but he held them together; his humor and his good heart were essential.

"I think what gets me most about these interviews with Sera Gamble is the way she frames Castiel’s death in relation to its impact on Sam and Dean. She never talks about the value of Castiel himself, apart from that. It’s always discussed in terms of how he provides information or help, or his betrayal of Dean and Sam. Never about his motivation for ‘betraying’ them, or what drove Castiel to help them."

This is perhaps the most succinct statement I’ve seen about the whole Sera Gamble thing. I’ve never been able to figure out why I disliked her interviews so much and this is exactly why. I care about Castiel as a character and I hate when he’s reduced to an object or a catalyst for a new story for Sam and Dean. I guess I just want to know that Cas matters too? (I promise I don’t dislike Sera as person, cause I don’t even know her, I just wish she cared about more than just Sam and Dean.)

This. TPTB deal with Castiel as a weapon, a resource, a beast of burden, and they have the Winchesters treating him accordingly.

Fans have accepted him as a beloved character, someone with a story, someone with agency, someone with motivations and feelings, NOT a tool to be used in situations. In these interviews alone, she’s basically reduced Cas to a ‘thing’, to a hotline, to ‘stuff’, and to the wooden horse housing the next plot twist.

But here’s the thing: I didn’t love Castiel because he made the brothers’ lives easier. And I’m saying this as someone who’s been with the show since THE PILOT.

When I loved Cas for ‘what he did for them’, it was because these deeds showed who he was as a person and a friend: the love and consideration in his heart. When I loved that he sacrificed himself, it wasn’t because ‘it helped Sam and Dean’, but because Castiel demonstrated bravery and selfless heroism. When I loved that he came back after doubts and torture and the knowledge that he would die – but trusted in these humans, in spite of it all - it wasn’t because ‘oh yes they have an ally now’, but because it showed Castiel’s capacity to reach out, admit that there was a better way, and be the bigger man. I loved it too when he returned home to try to set things right, showing that he hadn’t just forgotten about his brothers and sisters, and still felt the call of duty.

When I loved that Castiel rebelled, it was because he evinced an intention to learn and grow and think for himself, to acquire a more complex view of right and wrong than “things I am ordered to do without good reason” (*pointed glare at s6*).

Not because it would assist Sam and Dean.

Not because of his ‘utility’. He’s not white goods.

I love Castiel for Castiel, as a character in his own right. Everything he was, is, and could be, which extends so far past the Winchesters that it leaves me aghast when people don’t see it. I have an emotional connectionto the character. This escalated in Season 6 despite certain efforts to quash it. Because I love him in his own right.

And TPTB don’t understand. What’s worse is that Sera keeps on claiming that they ‘love’ him. Ha. They love him like an efficient little vacuum cleaner. You might ‘love’ the job that the vacuum cleaner does but not care less if it were any other brand or item, so long as it kept the carpet clean. As if Castiel is something generic and replaceable, purely a matter of function.

That is overwhelmingly how it comes across in Sera’s interviews, so any reassurances ring utterly false. I can’t trust them at all to ever treat him properly even if he were to return, because when she claims that they love Castiel like we love Castiel, it’s simply not true, and it shows.
